Kings Norton kids are good sports on their big day

NOT even wet weather could put a dampener on the annual sports day at a Birmingham school.

With the playing fields sodden and unable to be used, pupils and staff at Broadmeadow Junior School in Kings Norton switched to the neighbouring infant school playground.

Junior school head Judy Matthiae said: “We couldn’t use the fields because they were soggy after all the rain, so we had to use the playground at the infant school.

“Their sports day is on a different day.”

Broadmeadow has held an annual sports day ever since the school opened 53 years ago.

Ms Matthiae added: “There is a certain element of competition because we still have old fashioned houses.

“But it’s healthy competition and everyone gets cheered on, even the ones who are not so good at sport.

“The children like it and the parents like it too,” she added.

All of Broadmeadow Junior’s 238 pupils took part in the event, which included the traditional activities of running, football and hockey, as well as bean bag throwing and passing a ball under the legs.

After a keenly-fought contest, the winning trophy was presented to Ash house at an assembly.
