Old girls at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girl’s 80th anniversary

MORE than 300 old girls returned to their old alma mater when a school held celebrations to mark its 80th anniversary.

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls opened in 1929.

One of the guests of honour at Saturday’s event was 94-year-old Joy Wood, from Edgbaston, who was one of the first batch of pupils.

She said: “I hadn’t been back to the school for many years. When I was there it was only half built and it didn’t even have its own sports fields. It was nice to have the chance to look at the school today and see all the changes.

“There weren’t any computers there in my day. I’m not sure I would like to be a student nowadays but I loved it when I was there.

“It was a wonderful day, it’s a wonderful school,” she added.

Old girls from the last 80 years up to the present day attended the event at the Jockey Road school.
