Ex-Wolves striker fined over dumped rubbish on country lane
A COVENTRY City soccer star has been fined £750 by magistrates after rubbish belonging to him was found dumped in a country lane.
Striker Freddy Eastwood, who joined the club from Wolves in a £1.2 million deal last summer, was also ordered to pay £834 in costs.
South Staffordshire Council said the footballer, of Stanklyn Lane, Kidderminster, was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £15.
Eastwood, 25, pleaded guilty at Stafford Magistrates’ Court to paying somebody to dispose of his waste without the required permit, and in breach of the Environmental Protection Act.
Venice Archer-Dyer, prosecuting, told magistrates that officials were contacted by a member of the public who had found the rubbish in Red Lane, Gospel End, near Sedgley.
Council officers then found a number of letters, including bank statements addressed to Eastwood, who later admitted that he had paid a man £120 to dispose of the rubbish.
The council’s deputy leader for environmental services, Joan Williams, said: “Much of South Staffordshire is in the green belt and we will not let a small number ruin it for everyone by illegally dumping rubbish.
“Strangely, in this case, the rubbish that was dumped could have been taken to a local tip for free, or left for the bin men.”
