Birmingham brothers reunited in Afghanistan
The Helmand Provincial Reconstruction Team has just 120 staff, but looks after an area nearly three times the size of Wales.
“It’s a tough job, but we’re doing a lot to improve life for people who have been brutalised by the Taliban.”
Over the last three years, Mr Barre’s colleagues had helped the Afghan Government to open 47 schools, he added.
“We’re working hard to free Afghanistan from the grip of the narcotics trade, as well. There’s so much work to be done; I’m incredibly proud to play my part.”
Mr Barre, who joined the RAF in 2001, supports the fight against Taliban insurgents by ensuring the RAF’s fast jet aircraft are loaded with some of Britain’s most sophisticated surveillance equipment.
He said: “The jets do a really amazing job here. Our boys in the field rely upon fast jets to help keep the insurgents at bay.
“I have to make sure the jets’ surveillance pods are working properly. Without good intelligence from our aircraft, things could be a lot tougher.”
