West Bromwich Albion players banned from signing autographs
BAGGIES fans look set to be left disappointed by a club decision to ban players from signing autographs.
Club officials said they have taken the step to ban autographs outside the West Bromwich Albion training ground, in Birmingham Road, Walsall, to “stop abuse of the players’ goodwill”.
The club claimed some signature-hunters were profiteering from players autographs by selling them on the internet.
An Albion spokesman said: “The club has taken this step to stop abuse of the players’ goodwill and prevent profiteering from bulk signings of West Bromwich Albion items to sell on websites such as ebay.
“Genuine fans will still have access to player autographs outside The Hawthorns on matchdays and at regular player appearances in the community.”
However, the decision will prove unpopular among fans, according to Baggies supporter Vic Stirrup who’s followed The Hawthorns side for 85 years.
“The players ought to give their autographs anywhere – the fans are paying their wages,” said 90-year-old Mr Stirrup, of William Road, Smethwick.
“You see lots of children at the training ground who just want to get their heroes’ autographs.
“It’ll be an unpopular decision with fans.”
