Digbeth car clamping firm boss is arrested

The boss of a Midland car clamping firm at the centre of a fraud investigation has been arrested and questioned by police.

Steve Ryan was interviewed as officers continued to probe Car Clamping Securities over allegations a ticket machine had been rigged to dupe drivers.

Mr Ryan was arrested yesterday after going to Digbeth police station with a solicitor for a pre-arranged appointment, before being released on police bail to a date to be fixed. That came just two weeks after four of his employees were arrested in dawn raids across the West Midlands.

Drivers complained they were forced to pay £315 to have their cars released from a compound, despite believing they had paid for a full day of parking.

But, speaking before his arrest, Mr Ryan insisted neither he nor his firm had done anything wrong.

“That machine is no different to any of our others and we are doing nothing different to what we have done for the last 20 years,” he said. “There are some cowboy firms out there and trading standards should be going after them.

“We are far too established to have to resort to that sort of tactic. I was very surprised to hear we had been raided because we haven’t done anything wrong.”
