'Riot' at youth remand centre near Wolverhampton

POLICE, fire and ambulance crews were called to a Midland young offenders’ institution after serious trouble broke out among inmates.

One unnamed member of the emergency services described last night’s trouble at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution as “a riot”.

Police were at the institution, near Wolverhampton, for more than three hours, while firefighters and ambulance crews stood by.

Around a dozen officers, some from Stafford and Cannock, were involved in quelling the trouble which broke out at about 8.45pm.

It was not immediately clear if anyone had been seriously injured, nor if serious damage had been caused.

An emergency services worker, who asked not to be named, said: “We were called out to a riot at Brinsford, but I can’t say any more.”

Sgt Tracey Pointon of Staffordshire Police said: “We did have some disorder on the premises last night and it was brought to a swift conclusion shortly after midnight.

“It involved some disgruntled residents of the youth offenders institution.

“Staffordshire CID are following it up this morning to see if anybody was assaulted or injured.

“The ambulance service attended, but it was just as a contingency.

“Residents would have been segregated and put in individual cells to calm down.

“If there were any offences, they will go to court and could get additional time put on their sentences.”

No-one was immediately available for further comment from the police, nor from the institution.

A Staffordshire Fire Service spokesman said it would not comment on the incident as it was a police matter.
