Sutton Coldfield woman ran over love rival, court told

The “red mist” came down when a woman discovered her boyfriend had slipped out of bed to be with another woman.

And when she found the two of them together, she drove after her love rival and deliberately ran her over, it was claimed at Birmingham Crown Court.

Claire Hartwell, 37, of Andrew Court, Berryfields, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, has denied charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Roxanne Gaston, inflicting grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving.

Emma Cutts, prosecuting, said that, in August last year, the 20-year-old victim had been out with work colleagues in Birmingham city centre.

She said that, in the early hours of the morning, there was “phone contact” between Miss Gaston and the defendant’s boyfriend, Alexis Bardsley, and they arranged to meet up at the Asda supermarket in Minworth.

Miss Gaston and Mr Bardsley then began to walk back to his home.

Miss Cutts said the pair were walking, with Mr Bardsley’s arm around Miss Gaston’s shoulder, when Hartwell came up in a Renault Clio.

Miss Cutts said Hartwell then started shouting abuse at her boyfriend, telling him to get away from the “ginger bitch”.
