MG Rover ends production in Birmingham until next spring

Production of MG sports cars in Birmingham has ended for the year and will not resume until next spring, with the likely loss of jobs.

Chinese-owned MG Motor said production of its TF model at the former Rover plant in Longbridge will start again next March.

The firm would not comment on reports that 20 jobs will be lost, saying: "We have notified employees of the highest possible number of redundancies and are working with them to minimise this.

"As this is a consultation process, we cannot confirm yet when this will be finalised.

"Clearly this is a difficult time for employees and it would be irresponsible to make this a bigger issue than it is and to worry more people than absolutely necessary.

"It should be covered when the facts on how many people will be affected are clear and speculation is not helpful at the moment."
