Great British Eatery named as best chip shop in the Midlands

Owners Conrad Brunton (left) and Andy Insley celebrate.

A Birmingham chippy is celebrating after scooping two culinary awards including the region’s best fish and chip shop.

Earlier this year, the Great British Eatery (GBE), based at Broadway Plaza, became the first takeaway in the Midlands to receive a five-star grading for its quality grub, from the industry’s governing body Seafish.

Former school friends Conrad Brunton and Andrew Insley set up the takeaway last year after they decided they could not find any decent fish and chips in the city.

On Monday, GBE was named as the winner in the regional Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition 2009 and will now go head to head against 20 other shops to win the national award.

Conrad, aged 27, from Stourbridge, said: “Being shortlisted for the top five in the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Staffordshire was amazing. To go up against people who have been in business for years and win was amazing. To finish in the top ten in the country, will be well beyond our wildest dreams.”

Conrad was also selected out of more than 400 applicants for the Against All Odds award, which acknowledges people who have shown commitment and determination to make their business succeed.

* Cheap As Chips Verdict

HAVING been on Cheap As Chips duty more than 200 times in the past four years, I am not surprised that the industry’s governing body Seafish has judged this marvellous chippy to be the best across the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Staffordshire.

A £1 tray of golden wonders weighed 300g on my in-car scales. They use ultra reliable Maris Piper potatoes from Stourport-on-Severn which are washed and shipped up on a daily basis and cooked to perfection.

I reckon they have a good chance of winning the national title in January because all of their food is always cooked fresh to order.
