New opening time for landmark pub
A GRADE two-listed pub in Dudley that has been empty for years is to be brought back to life next month with a £238,000 boost.
Workmen are set to go into the former Crown pub, in Wolverhampton Street, to carry out external and internal repairs, reinstatement of historic features and refurbishment of the interior.
The second floor will become office space and will be occupied by New Heritage Regeneration, with the ground and first floors available to let for other uses potentially including pub, restaurant, office or shops.
The project is being assisted with funding from Dudley Townscape Heritage Initiative, a five-year heritage-led regeneration grant, supported by Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the Heritage Lottery Fund and the council.
The refurbishment of the building will be the first to receive funding from Dudley Townscape Heritage Initiative.
Councillor Les Jones, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The refurbishment of the former Crown pub is really exciting news for Dudley and is the start of the delivery of regeneration activity within the town centre.
“This is a significant building in a key location and one which I am keen to see restored and brought back into use.”
Mark Foley, Black Country partnership director at AWM, said: “This first scheme from the Dudley Townscape Heritage Initiative is great news for Dudley town centre.
“Advantage West Midlands has put £96,000 into this initiative and will continue to work closely with New Heritage Regeneration Ltd to support the council’s regeneration efforts.”
Work is expected to be completed early in the New Year.
