Film Review: The Twilight Saga - New Moon ***

The Twilight Saga - New Moon

A YEAR after Twilight launched Hollywood’s lucrative journey through Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling books, along comes the eagerly-anticipated sequel.

Form a queue now, because cinemas throughout Birmingham have been enjoying very heavy advanced bookings for this opening weekend – with even the near-100-year-old Electric Cinema cashing in down Station Street.

The result on screen, though, is a bit like taking a walk through St Philip’s Cathedral square at the weekend when it’s full of goths.

There’s plenty of striking-looking young people on show, but you do wonder that they are doing there when there’s so little happening.

Such is the lot of an adolescent, trapped in that half-world between childhood and the uncertainty of the adult journey ahead, they probably couldn’t tell you if you asked the question.

And so it is for Bella (Kristen Stewart) whose 18th birthday party isn’t the stuff of her dreams.

She’s a human, remember, with a vampire boyfriend.

Except bloodsucking Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) decides to do the honourable thing – and leave the small town of Forks, Washington, for her own safety. What a sweet tooth he’s got!

If his decision plunges Bella’s life into turmoil just when she’s in the final year of high school, a strange thing then happens.

The more she puts herself at risk, the likelier it is that Ever Ready Eddie’s image will appear in time to guide her through the next step of her life.

Meanwhile, feelings are brewing between her and old schoolfriend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

When Bella learns the secret of his mysterious Quileute tribe and the real reason why Edward left her, the stage is set for the final cliffhanger which  will lead us on to Eclipse – the next film due for release here on July 9 next year.
