Driver will not face charges over Birmingham crash death

John Braid, who was killed in a car crash in Smith's Wood

NO charges will be brought against the driver of a car involved in a fatal road crash.

John Joseph Braid died close to his home in Smiths Wood in May.

A 22-year-old man understood to have been driving a black Renault in the same direction along Windward Way at the time of the crash was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. But now West Midlands Police has said no further action will be taken against the driver, from Chelmsley Wood.

Villa fan Mr Braid, aged 25, was driving his Fiat along the road on May 22 when it collided with a Mercedes van.

Neighbours in nearby Trent Drive told how onlookers rushed to help but nothing could be done to save Mr Braid. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 38-year-old driver of the van suffered whiplash injuries and was taken to Heartlands Hospital. In a statement, Mr Braid’s family said: “John was the best son and brother anyone could have wished for and will be sorely missed.”

A police spokesman confirmed: “The 22-year-old man was released without charge.”
