Pupils from a Druids Heath school took on the role of firefighters

SCHOOL uniforms were replaced with fireproof gear as youngsters got to grips with the challenging role of firefighters.

Fourteen pupils from Baverstock School in Druids Heath were put through their paces at the West Midlands Fire Service Brigade Training Centre in Smethwick.

The year nine group are partaking in a ten-week project organised by deputy head teacher Sharon Smith, to promote “real life” learning at the school.

Ms Smith, who was inspired by a week’s research study in New Mexico, said the scheme’s emphasis was on hands-on learning.

“I wanted to find something important for the school and community, to make the children active citizens.”

Ms Smith, with support from a dedicated team of staff at the Bells Lane school, organised a pilot run of three weekly activities for 50 children.

The first group have been taking part in a specially-adapted project with the fire service, which includes basic training and home safety awareness.

The second team join park rangers in Rubery to help look after the nature reserve, while the third group get their hands dirty learning the art of theatrical make-up.
