25 escape from Wednesfield factory fire

AROUND 25 workers were evacuated from a factory when a huge piece of machinery caught fire.

Six fire crews attended the blaze at Corus Steel, in Steelpark Way, Wednesfield, yesterday at just after 8pm.

A sheet blasting machine, measuring 10m by 20m, was on fire and was “70 per cent destroyed” by the blaze. It was used to clean steel. Fourteen firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “It was pretty intense at one point and because the machine was right in the centre of the factory, our problem was getting water through to it.

“We were called out to reports of people inside, but the afternoon shift had been evacuated by the time we got there.”

Two crews from Fallings Park, one of which remained on site today to keep an eye on the situation, attended.

No injuries were reported and there was no indication of what caused the fire.

Nobody from the Corus site was immediately available for comment.
