Updated: Nine youths arrested after man dies following Northfield assault
NINE youths have been arrested after a 50-year-old man died in hospital after being assaulted in Birmingham.
The attack was near shops and a school in Wychall Road, Northfield, at about 1.30am yesterday.
Mum-of-two Maxine Carter, who lives opposite the shops, was awoken by screams from the victim as he was kicked to death and a woman who was pleading with his attackers to stop.
The 35-year-old said: “I could hear a girl screaming and at first I just thought it was an argument between a boyfriend and a girlfriend.
“I looked out of my bedroom window and I saw a man lying on the floor. I heard the girl say: ‘Leave him alone now, he’s had enough,’ and then I saw another man run up and kick the guy on the floor. He really put the boot in. Then they all ran off in the direction of the school.”
The following morning, neighbours reported a number of smashed bottles by the chemist.
Last night, scrubland in front of a parade of shops on Wychall Road, near to Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, was still cordoned off. An officer at the scene said a group of youths had set upon the man.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “A 50-year-old man died in hospital after being assaulted. We were called to Wychall Road, Northfield, during the early hours. Officers have arrested nine people in connection with the incident who remain in custody helping with inquiries. We are also appealing for witnesses.”
