Councils back findings of Oneplace report

TODAY’S Oneplace report was welcomed by Black Country council bosses.

However, all said work to make the lives of residents better must continue despite the threat of cuts to services to slash budget costs.

Coun Mike Bird, leader of Walsall Council, said: “Overall we are pleased with the findings of our first ever area assessment.

“There are some definite improvements identified such as the reduction of crime. We are not going to rest on our laurels. We know there is still much work to be done.

“We will be developing action plans to address the issues that have been highlighted in the assessment so that further improvements can be made.”

Sandwell’s new council leader Coun Darren Cooper also said more work had to be done to continue improvements.

He said: “The report recognises Sandwell Council’s role in reducing crime, improving education and regeneration of the borough despite the economic climate.

“However, there is no room for complacency and we know there are areas where we could do better.”

Wolverhampton leader Coun Neville Patten said: “I believe that the Audit Commission has been fair in its assessment of Wolverhampton City Council as it stands now.

“The report recognises that improvements have been achieved and also recognises the challenges we have had to face in putting the council’s finances back on an even keel.

“I agree with the Commission’s view that the pace of change, particularly in delivering value for money, must be increased.”

Dudley leader Coun Anne Millward said: “This is the first year public services have been scored in this way and we are delighted with the outcome of our organisational report which has confirmed the council is offering good value for money to our residents.

“We are also pleased with the results of the CAA and the similarity between the two assessment reports reflects how closely and effectively we work with our partners.”
