Brave Perry Barr shopkeeper targeted for second time by gunmen

BRAVE Birmingham shopkeepers who faced down armed raiders have been targeted by gunmen for a second time in just over six months.

Father and son Reg and Phil Rowe were confronted by gunmen on the first occasion in May.

Their bravery led to Reg, aged 56, being given a Birmingham Mail Local Heroes Award.

But on the night of Monday, November 30, Phil stared stared death in the face again when masked robbers wielding a pistol struck again at their convenience store in Perry Barr.

He said three gunmen wearing scarves over their faces came into his Good Cheer store, in Dorrington Road at 9pm and demanded cash.

“They showed me the gun, which was a pistol, and at first I didn’t think it was real. But then I just thought I’m insured, just give them what’s in the till on a cold Monday night.”

But when he fumbled opening the till one of them leapt over the counter and hit him twice in the head.

“I wasn’t going to take it,” he added.

“I had a go back and let the dog in and it jumped over the counter and got one of them on the hand, pulling his glove off. Then they ran off.”
