Low income families could fall in Christmas debt-trap

LOW income families across Birmingham will fall into a Christmas debt-trap, according to a city charity.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service said the majority of people who aksed for help this year earned less than £20,000 and did not have enough cash to pay for their living costs.

They warned that problems would mount during the Christmas period and festive costs would push more people on low incomes into debt.

The service’s Birmingham branch manager Paula Hogarth said: “Christmas should be a time of enjoyment and relaxation.

“There are a number of ways that those who are celebrating can do so without pushing themselves into serious debt such as setting a budget limit and looking for special offers.

“For those who do need to borrow to pay for it, they should shop around for the best deals on credit cards and look for interest-free options and cash-back cards to get back money on purchases.

“They should plan what they are going to borrow and avoid using emergency credit sources as they often cost the most.

Anyone who is finding it difficult to make ends meet should seek help as soon as possible.

Help with budgeting and debt advice is available from the CCCS helpline, 8am to 8pm, on 0800 138 1111 or at anytime online from www.cccs.co.uk.

There is no charge for any of its services.
