Newbon's a Broad Street star

Gary Newbon collects his star at the ICC.

BIRMINGHAM television personality Gary Newbon has been honoured on Broad Street’s Walk of Stars.

Newbon, who has previously won three awards from the Royal Television Society, at the Lord’s Taverners Luncheon, was at the ICC to receive his star from Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby.

Other famous celebrities at the luncheon included Chris Eubank and former Birmingham University student and Tiswas host Chris Tarrant, who could also be in the running for a star in the coming year.

The inscribed award will be embedded in Broad Street’s Walk of Stars alongside those received by other Midland celebrities, including Julie Walters and Frank Skinner.

Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, comedian Jasper Carrott and glam rocker Noddy Holder, were recipients in 2007.

Speaking at the presentation, Newbon said: “I am thrilled both my broadcasting and local community efforts have been honoured here today. This was a proud day for both me and my family.

“Although I now broadcast in London, my new colleagues will tell you Birmingham is always in my heart. It was great to receive this honour from the leader of the council, who I have always admired, and Chris Tarrant, who is a great friend of mine. It’s been a great day.”

Newbon still lives in the Birmingham area and has been actively involved in many local charities and community activities helping to raise funds.

He joined ATV (later Central Television) in Birmingham in 1971 as the sports presenter.

He was controller of sport for Central Television and developed a range of sports programmes and talent both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. He also brought ITV’s network football coverage to the Birmingham studios.

He continued to present shows for Central until he left in August 2004 to join Sky Sports. Coun Whitby said: “It was a very exciting day and I was pleased to present Gary with his star as he is instantly recognisable after 40 years in local broadcasting.

“I believe his presentation comes between Julie Walters and Lenny Henry, which I believe is a perfect tribute and fit.”

Allan Sartori, marketing director for Broad Street Business Improvement District, said: “The Midlands is very proud of Gary and what he has done and continues to do for the region. We’re delighted to show our appreciation of his talent.”
