Everything up for sale at Borders bookshop’s final day in Bullring
SHELVES, light fittings and even the tills were on sale today as a city centre store opened for the last time.
The sell-off at bookshop Borders in the Bullring follows failed attempts by administrators to sell the national chain.
Unless a deal can be struck before midnight today, about 20 staff at the store will lose their jobs.
Liquidator MCR said it could not rule out a last-minute buyout, but said price-slashing of stock and the sale of fixtures and fittings would continue until a deal had been done.
The shop was offering discounts of up to 80 per cent on remaining stock.
Luke Derbyshire, spokesman for MCR, said: “The sale includes everything from shelving to electrical items and we wil be listening to offers on everything of assetable value to get the best deal for the creditors.
“The biggest aim for the administrator is a buy-out and we are still hopeful that a deal can be done for the chain.”
The 45-store retailer went into administration in November. Industry experts said it had fallen victim to falling sales due to pressure from supermarkets and the internet.
The Borders website stopped taking orders for books, music and DVDs weeks before the firm entered administration.
Publishers had hoped the outlet would be kept open until after Christmas, traditionally one of its most profitable times.
Mr Derbyshire said some stores could be sold on a piecemeal basis if no deal was done to offload the business as a going concern.
