Birmingham sport's project scoops top award

A BIRMINGHAM group that offers sporting opportunities to hundreds of disadvantaged people in the West Midlands has received a top award recognising its achievement.

Bend It Like Birmingham was set up in 2007 to help integrate communities in East Birmingham.

The project uses sport to improve the lives of people including the elderly, women, youngsters and people with disabilities.

The group has been presented with the 2009 BBC Power of Sport Award, supported by Sport England, at a ceremony in The Mailbox.

Kamran Hussain, from the scheme, said: “Winning the Power of Sport Award is fantastic recognition for the people who take part in the project, without whom none of our success would have be possible.”
