A MAN had a lucky escape when he woke up in time to find a fire in his Birmingham home.
The man is recovering in hospital after the blaze on Sunday, which was caused by a chip pan being left on the stove.
He woke up in bed just before 1am on Sunday to find his upstairs flat in Clements Road, Yardley, full of smoke.
Crew commander Steve Mann, from Sheldon fire station, said there had been a smoke detector but it had been removed.
“He was very lucky to have woken up just in time – if he’d been sleeping any longer we would almost certainly be looking at a fatality,” he said.
“This call just shows how important smoke detectors are and how they do save lives.”
The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to hospital and treated for the effects of breathing in smoke and soot.
Mr Mann said around 70 per cent of the man’s flat had suffered smoke and fire damage.
