Birmingham MP demands probe into why council boss was paid £200k 'gardening leave'

BIRMINGHAM MP Khalid Mahmood today called for a probe into why city council service director Berkley Broomes has been paid £200,000 to stay at home for two years after being suspended on full pay.

It is claimed Mr Broomes, aged 51, will also get £50,000 compensation after an allegation made against him was dismissed. His department, the Adults and Communities Directorate, is in financial crisis with hundreds of care home staff facing redundancy.

A council source said he was allowed to stay on “gardening leave” despite being cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Perry Barr Labour MP said: “This is a ludicrous waste of public money and in the end we will all be paying for it through our council taxes.”

Mr Broomes was not available for comment.
