Neighbours celebrate St George's Day with street party

A SET of neighbours celebrated St George’s Day with a good old-fashioned street party.

The bash on Waggon Walk, West Heath, saw about 70 people take to their road to celebrate the nation’s saint on Friday evening.

They all took food to share with each other, as well arranging children’s activities, a DJ and fund-raising raffles.

The event was organised by former care worker Cathie Gordon, aged 61.

She said: “I tried to do it last year, but had to cancel because my grandson was very ill in hospital.

“So this year I wanted to do it again.

“I asked everyone to bring some food and contribute to the raffles and fund-raising.

“We are collecting for the Wythall Animal Sanctuary and for Help for Heroes, which is for injured soldiers.

“It is just our way of celebrating our country and being proud of it and doing something to help.”
