Buck Chinn loses fight against cancer

Lifelong Aston Villa fan Buck Chinn

FOOTBALL fans’ champion and lifelong Aston Villa supporter Buck Chinn has lost his battle against cancer.

Buck, father of Birmingham historian Carl Chinn, died at his Moseley home yesterday morning, surrounded by his family.

Birmingham Mail columnist Carl paid tribute to his father saying he “was proud to have been born in Sparkbrook, proud of being a Brummie and proud to be an Englishman”.

He said: “The two things that meant a lot to him was where he came from and where he belonged. He was a wonderful father, son, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He lived for his family.”

Carl said Buck was determined to fight the cancer when he was diagnosed last November, undergoing gruelling chemotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

But his condition rapidly deteriorated a fortnight ago when doctors discovered he had developed secondary brain cancer.

Carl paid tribute to the tremendous care Buck received from the NHS.

He said: “We are a strong NHS family. He had wonderful care from the cancer centre, the QE, his surgery, St Mary’s Hospice, his pharmacies and the nurses. I’d like to thank them.”

Bookmaker and avid Villa fan Buck founded the Aston Villa Democracy Group in 1982, following the resignation of manager Ron Saunders in January that year.

Buck, who was married for 56 years, leaves behind his wife Sylvie, aged 74, another son Darryl, 52, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Details of his funeral will be announced soon.
