Revealed: When Arts Council cuts in the Midlands will fall

ARTS organisations across the West Midlands will be feeling the pinch following funding cuts by the Arts Council England.

The region is among the biggest losers in the cuts, which will see 0.5 per cent shaved off the organisation’s annual hand-outs.

Among those hit hardest by the announcement is the Birmingham Royal Ballet, which will see its funding cut by just over £41,000 to £8.2 million, and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will also lose £80,000 as its 2010/11 funding is reduced to £16 million.

Regional organisations will lose a total of £243,000 from a £48.6 million combined annual budget, but Birmingham Royal Ballet’s chief executive Christopher Barron said he was “relieved” that the decision had been brought down from a possible cut of four per cent.

Arts Council England’s budget for the next three years (2011-14) will be decided in the Government’s spending review, the results of which is expected in the autumn.
