West Midlands Police slammed over Twitter dog Smithy
He said: “He felt he and his team weren’t getting the praise they deserved and the next thing I knew he was tweeting.
“We’ve had to have the keyboard adapted so he can type.
“It’s a bit of fun really, but every dog has his day and this is Smithy’s.”
But a spokewoman for the TaxPayers’ Alliance rubbished the PR move, saying: “It difficult to see how putting a dog on Twitter is supposed to benefit the people of the West Midlands.
“The tweets aren’t even casually informative, they’re just nonsense dreamt up by a member of staff.
“This silly PR stunt is a just a diversion from real police work, and with cuts being made Smithy should probably keep his nose to the ground and concentrate on the job.”
And one prospective police-officer, who was recently due to join the force, but has been delayed by cuts in recruitment, condemned the move.
The 28-year-old, from Rubery, who did not wish to be named, said: “They are struggling for front-line officers yet they can invest time and money in these silly PR stunts.”
