A NETWORK of tram-style buses linking the city centre to the airport and Birmingham’s golden mile of pubs and clubs was today unveiled.

Transport bosses say they hope to have the new “rapid transit” system which will be called Birmingham Sprint on the roads within five years.

One line will run from New Street along Broad Street to Five Ways and another will link the city centre to Birmingham Airport.

The express buses will not turn on rails but instead use dedicated lanes and have priority at traffic lights.

It is hoped that the routes will be replaced with permanent tramways within the next two decades as part of proposals being outlined for the future of city centre transport.

Birmingham’s Vision for Movement will be announced at the ICC this morning after it was drawn up by council and transport chiefs.
