6cm of snow expected today in Birmingham

NO END is in sight to the early blast of winter – with up to 6cm of snow expected to fall in Birmingham today.

Snow in Birmingham

With temperatures forecast to dip to as low as -8C last night, they were not expected to rise above 1C during daylight hours.

And it was predicted the conditions would continue to plunge the region’s roads and pavements into chaos.

Robin Thwaytes, from the Met Office, said he expected today to see the week’s heaviest snowfall. “At the moment there is no end in sight to the cold snap,” he said.

Across the city, icy roads caused by water gushing from burst pipes led to traffic delays.

Following bitterly cold overnight frosts, heavy traffic built up in Yardley Wood Road, Yardley Wood, yesterday morning as repair work was carried out on a burst water main between the A4040 Brook Lane and School Road.

The four-inch pipe burst on Saturday. A temporary traffic light had to be installed while Severn Trent officials worked to fix the problem.

It was expected to remain in place until tomorrow afternoon.
