Devoted Shirley husband is named best in Britain

A DEVOTED husband who visits his wife daily in a care home has scooped the prize for Britain’s best relative.

Bernard Jarvis

Caring Bernard Jarvis, aged 81, from Shirley, Solihull, not only cheers up his beloved wife Hilda at Bramley Court Care Home, in Yardley Wood, but the other residents too.

Judges at the National Care Awards were overwhelmed by Bernard’s dedication and volunteer work at the home, where his wife must now live after suffering two strokes and hip replacements.

Bernard, a retired lorry driver for Group Four in Birmingham, said: “I have been married to my wife for 34 years and eight years ago she had to come to Bramley Court.

“Life can be cruel sometimes. I had a serious heart attack in 2002 and I made a pledge that if I came out of hospital, I would make people happy.

“I come most days to see my wife and also entertain the other residents.

“Sometimes I sing. Just to put a smile on their faces makes my day.” Staff at Bramley Court nominated Bernard for the award, sponsored by the Relatives and Residents Association, and was presented the prize by comedian Brian Conley

“I am still in shock at winning this award,” added Bernard. “I cried when I heard.”
