Pype Hayes man named Birmingham’s best bus driver

DARREN Dunbar’s smiling face is well known to the passengers on his double decker.

And he has been beaming even wider since he won the title of Birmingham’s best bus driver.

The 39-year-old beat off competition from hundreds of colleagues to be crowned the smoothest and safest in the city behind the wheel of a double decker.

And although it wasn’t quite enough for top spot at the coveted national Bus Driver of The Year awards – seen as the industry Oscars – he managed fifth place and was named best National Express employee.

But the modest dad-of-one said he wouldn’t let the success go to his head as he returned to his routes around Sutton Coldfield with a clutch of trophies.

“I take a lot of pride in my job and it’s nice to be recognised, but I still look up to a lot of other drivers at my garage,” he said.

“I don’t see it as an individual achievement, but more as the result of all the good training and advice I have from my colleagues.

“I just try to do my job as well as I can and be courteous to all my passengers.”

Every aspect of driving a bus came under the close scrutiny of judges at each step of the competition.
