BUSINESS tycoon John Caudwell left school with no A levels – but can today call himself a doctor after being recognised by a Birmingham university.
The city-born billionaire left school to sweep the floor at a pottery factory in Stoke-on-Trent before going on to make a fortune.
His company, Phones4U, once sold 26 mobile phones a minute and employed 8,000 people across the globe.
But Mr Caudwell was yesterday recognised for his charity work when he was given an honorary doctorate by Birmingham City University.
He sold Phones4U in 2006 and set up Caudwell Children, which provides equipment and treatment for sick and disabled kids.
“It’s fantastic to be honoured by the university and I feel very privileged that I am being recognised for something I get so much pleasure from,” he said.
“I still have some business interests but I don’t miss being involved to the extent I used to be because it is so rewarding to see the difference that charity makes to people’s lives.
