3,000 at RAF Cosford for 75th anniversary of Spitfire

MORE than 3,000 people travelled to RAF Cosford for the 75th anniversary of the super Spitfire, with many eager to speak to the hero pilots who played a part in one of Britain’s greatest victories.

Pilots Tony Pickering, Ken Wilkinson, Margaret Frost, Sid Lenthall and Jim Scott reunited at RAF Cosford.

Female pilot Margaret Frost joined three former Spitfire pilots and an engineer who was stationed at the Midlands base to mark the anniversary of the iconic plane’s first flight.

Sadly, a flight to mark the occasion had to be scrapped due to poor weather but visitors said the highlight was hearing firsthand the wartime experiences of the pilots.

RAF Museum Cosford General Manager Alex Medhurst said: “We had an amazing amount of interest in the weekend’s event. The Spitfire is the most iconic aircraft and the 75th of the first Spitfire flight is an important occasion. We had over 3,000 people attend on Saturday. The question and answer session was very much the highlight.

“The Spitfire flight unfortunately had to be cancelled due tot the weather. Air Marshall Chris Spinks was due to come from Cambridge.”
