FIRE crews called to a fire at a block of sheltered accommodation in Cotteridge found a pensioner burning a box of cigars.

They found the 75-year-old in the kitchen surrounded by thick smoke on Thursday evening.

He was given oxygen and taken to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.
