AS BIRMINGHAM City face a battle for survival in the Premiership this weekend their female counterparts are showing them how it’s done.

The ladies team, formed in 1968 by a group of girl supporters, are currently leading the Women’s Super League.

Their squad has four England players who stand a chance of playing in the women’s World Cup in Germany this summer.

Star striker Karen Carney scored a penalty and the second goal in a 2-0 victory in a friendly against Sweden on Tuesday night.

Chairman Steve Shipway credits some of their success to the support they had from Blues in getting into the league, which only started up this year.

He added: “You also have to put it down to managing to put together a very good pool of players of some internationals, some young internationals and a great team spirit. For years Arsenal have been the be all and end all in women’s football but after our away win there, they’re now chasing us.

“I’ve been chairman 11 years and that’s never happened before.”

Blues Ladies went top on goal difference after the first game of the league’s season, which runs from April to September.
