BRIDE Marie Barnwell declared ‘I do’ to her new husband James – seconds before jumping into a waiting police car to see her 17-month-old son in hospital.
Little Daniel suddenly struggled to breathe, turned blue, then fell semi-conscious in a suspected asthma attack minutes before the couple were due to tie the knot at St Chad’s Church, in Rubery.
Vicar David James jumped into action as the drama unfolded at midday on Saturday.
Daniel, a page boy, was stabilised by paramedics and taken to A&E with his uncle.
And Rev James did a shortened ‘quickie’ ceremony to declare James and Marie man and wife – after ten years of being engaged.
He then arranged for police to take the newlyweds from the church to Birmingham Children’s Hospital – still in their bridal clothes.
Confetti trailed across the A&E floor as they rushed to be at Daniel’s side.
Dad-of-one James, aged 29, of Hollyhill Road, Rubery, said: “I was waiting at the altar and Daniel was page boy in a little suit when someone said he was wheezing.
“I went over, but he wasn’t breathing properly and his lips turned blue, so I got straight on the phone for an ambulance.
“Paramedics got his little shirt and tie off and put on a heart monitor and gas mask. He was semi-conscious and it was scary, but they managed to stabilise him.
