RACING fans are being offered the chance to cruise down Broad Street in a super car this Sunday, as part of the celebrations to induct Nigel Mansell into Birmingham’s Walk of Stars.
The Formula One legend will be presented with the honour at around 2.30pm, followed by a question and answer session with former star recipient, sports presenter Gary Newbon.
But from 12noon, Birmingham charity The Sporting Bears is offering thrill-seekers the opportunity to try out a range of sports cars and classic cars including an Aston Martin DB9, Lotus Elan and Jaguar E-type.
The price of a 20-minute ride along Broad Street and Middleway, part of the city’s former Grand Prix route, will cost from £15 to £30, depending on the car, and all money raised will go towards children’s charities.
Mike Olley, Broad Street manager, said: “We’re thrilled to not only be celebrating Nigel and his career, but now to be raising money for such a good cause and in such a unique way. Come down and join in the celebrations!”
The Broad Street Walk of Stars honours those people who have made a significant contribution in the categories of music, television, film, radio, theatre, sport, business and literacy.
Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne was the first to receive a star in July 2007, followed by comedian Jasper Carrott and glam rocker Noddy Holder.
In 2008 sporting commentator Murray Walker, long time ‘Archers’ cast member Norman Painting and Tony Iommi, founding member of Black Sabbath, also joined the walk.
Born near Birmingham and resident in Hall Green for many years, Nigel remains the most successful British Formula One driver of all time, with 31 race victories.
His fans will get to see him in action driving a Westfield sports car and one of University of Birmingham innovative hydrogen fleet.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be following in the footsteps of so many talented Brummies,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to the 14th and seeing my fans.”
