BBC WM presenter Phil Upton announced split with wife live on air

BBC WM breakfast host Phil Upton has revealed live on air that he has split up from wife Catherine, the mother of his two children.

The Birmingham-born presenter told listeners ‘the time was right’ to make the news public.

Phil said: I’m moving house and just want to take a minute to explain why I’m moving house.

“Publicly, I’ve not mentioned anything about this so far.

“But the time is right for me to come on and say my wife and I have decided, unfortunately, to split up.

“It’s sad, but it’s life, and it’s something I’m afraid that’s all too common these days.”

Sounding calm and collected, Phil added: “I’m saying this because when lots of you call in, you all say ‘how’s the family, how are the kids doing?’.

“I want to reassure they are all fine and very excited in fact about moving house and having two houses and two bedrooms and two sets of toys.

“So we’re all coping.

“I’m going to back on September 1 a new, recharged refreshed Phil Upton.”

A former pupil of Turves Green Boys School, Phil went on to Matthew Boulton Technical College and then Birmingham Polytechnic (now BCU) at Perry Barr where he took a degree in communications studies.

Next month marks the fifth anniversary of his stint in the breakfast chair at BBC WM. He succeeded Adrian Goldberg who is set to replace Ed Doolan on the lunchtime show after the veteran Aussie steps down on September 2 ready to host a new Sunday show.
