FORMER Aston Villa star and terrace hero Bernard Gallacher has died in Sutton Coldfield’s Good Hope Hospital following a short illness.

The Scottish-born full-back, aged just 45, became the second member of Villa’s 1987-88 promotion winning season back to the top flight to pass away following the death of midfielder Paul Birch from bone cancer two years ago.
Gallacher, who was a marauding full-back famed for runs down the flank and whole-hearted effort, was a favourite with Holte Enders.
Former player and radio pundit Pat Heard said: “Bernie became a cult hero during the 1987-88 promotion season and never gave less than 100 per cent every game. I hope the club and fans give him a fitting tribute.”
Gallacher joined Villa from school and rose through to youth and reserve teams to become a first team regular during the promotion season.
He made 55 appearances and two as a substitute.
