TEMPERATURES are set to plunge below zero as the cold snap maintains its grip on the region.

Although much of Birmingham and the Black Country escaped yesterday’s forecast snowfalls, motorists were warned to be aware of icy road surfaces.

Clear skies and weak winter sunshine this morning will enable thermometers to edge just above freezing but after dusk it will drop, quickly bringing a sharp frost and icy patches.

Forecasters again predicted wintry showers but these will be confined to high ground north of Birmingham.

Tomorrow will again be cold with winds picking up from the north-west. However, it is likely to remain dry with sunny spells. Once again temperatures will plummet during a cold night leading to a widespread frost and icy patches on untreated roads.

It will become milder next week with occasional showers.
