Leap Year marriage proposal for happy couple

Nikki Stearman proposes to David Chard on February 29.

THE city woman who stunned her boyfriend with a leap year proposal in Welsh that was recorded and filmed by the Birmingham Mail has set her mind on a marriage to remember.

Nikki Stearman, a teacher at a prison in Rugby, dreamt up the brave leap year proposal.

The 39-year-old from Redditch shocked her boyfriend Dave Chard, a 41-year-old quality manager from Bedworth, when she went down on one knee in front of diners and our photographer and video journalist at the Rilys Indian restaurant, in Redditch town centre.

Nikki, who has a four-year-old son from a previous relationship, even secretly wore a microphone for the proposal, which she made in Welsh because Dave is originally from Bridgend.

He said: "I had no idea she was planning it at all. I was gobsmacked when she asked.

"I had not even noticed the camera when she started to read the poem."

The couple, who met seven months ago on an internet dating site, spent the weekend with Dave's family.

They were bombarded with messages of congratulation from friends and family who had seen the Mail website and the newspaper.

Nikki said: "He did not have a clue that I was going to ask. It involved a lot of planning. We will be going to the Jewellery Quarter on Saturday, so that I can choose a ring, but the ring that I chose and bought him is perfect because he really likes it."
