Lorry crash on M5 causes commuter chaos

The crash scene after a lorry went into the central reservation on the M5 at Junction 4a near Bromsgrove.

MOTORISTS faced traffic chaos today after a section of Midland motorway was closed by an accident.

West Midlands Police shut Junction 4a of the M5, where it joins the M42 at Bromsgrove, after a lorry smashed into the central reservation in the early hours of the morning.

Workers had removed the accident wreckage by 7am but the Highways Agency said the motorway would remain closed while the damage to the central reservation and road was being assessed.

Motorists were advised to leave the M5 at earlier junctions.

Stuart Thompson, of the Highways Agency, said they were unable to say when the motorway would reopen.

Mr Thompson said: "We are working very hard to assess damage to the central reservation and road surface. We do not know when the motorway will be open."
