Tap water 'safe' after major fire

ENVIRONMENT experts have reassured Worcestershire families that water supplies are safe to drink after a warehouse blaze.

Water used by firefighters to combat last Wednesday's fire at a packaging warehouse in Stanier Road, Warndon, Worcester, ran off into water courses, making the liquid appear muddy with a burned smell.

Worcester City Council said there were no safety concerns.

Environmental health manager Martin Gillies said: "The type of plastic packaging which was destroyed by the fire did not contain some of the more serious potential chemical pollutants and there is no hazard to human health.

"The next concern relates to the impact on the natural environment and ensuring the water used for fighting the fire did not enter water courses via road gullies.

"The water was diverted into foul sewers by Severn Trent Water and the Environment Agency."
