Newsagent Baldev Dhir still making the news at 80

Baldev Dhir

MEET great-grandad Baldev Dhir, the oldest newsagent in town.

The 80-year-old, from Hall Green, has been busy running his chain of newsagents for the last 32 years and shows no sign of slowing down.

Baldev – nicknamed Lol by his customers – still does the morning shift five days a week at his Alcester Road South Store in Hollywood and said his customers were like family to him.

The father-of-five said: “A lot of people that used to come in as children to buy sweets now come in with their own teenagers.

“People come in for their copy of the Birmingham Mail and a chat and I like to keep working.”

Baldev traded in a factory job for running his own business after buying his first store back in 1976.

The impeccably turned out pensioner still wears a suit to work every day.

He added: “I don’t like the look of overalls and think it’s important to look smart for customers.”
