Post office shooting: Mother's tribute to her "beautiful boy"

They moved to the town in October 2003, after living in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, for 17 years.

He was described as a “technological whiz” and car enthusiast, and attended Lakers Secondary School in Coleford, Gloucestershire, before going on to study at the nearby Royal Forest of Dean College. He also has a brother James, who is 27.

Heartbroken Judy added: “His death was a callous act. Craig came down to protect us and fought for what he believed in – his family, friends and the business which he had worked so hard to help us build.

“My husband and myself are so proud of the way he led his life and defended us to the end, and of how incredibly brave he was.

“Any mother – especially the mothers of the thugs who did this – if they have any maternal instinct, they should stop and think how they would feel.

“Someone, somewhere knows something about who did this and they should come forward and help the police.”

It was not the first time the family had been targeted by raiders. Both Ken and Craig sent two burglars fleeing empty-handed during an attempted raid at their post office in 2004. Craig tackled the robbers while dressed only in his underpants.

Horace Lynton, aged 55, who runs the nearby Swan pub, said: “Craig would have done anything to protect his family and their shop. The village is devastated.”
