Prisoner gives himself up to police

A inmate who escaped from a prison in Worcestershire has given himself up to police.

West Mercia Police has confirmed that Thomas Maloney, 33, from Coventry, returned to HMP Hewell prison on July 3, of his own accord.

He was one of three prisoners discovered missing from HMP Hewell in Hewell Lane near Redditch during a roll call on June 7..

He was serving an eight-year sentence for drugs offences and police will now be liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service over potential charges in connection with his abscondment from HMP Hewell.

Two other men who were discovered missing at the same time as Maloney are still outstanding. Teriry Lowe, aged 24, from the Plumstead area of London, and Nicolas Cole, aged 32, from Coventry, were both serving sentences for murder.

A dedicated team of officers from West Mercia Police has been working with other agencies and police forces to try to locate these men since they were reported missing from the prison, and there has been close liaison with the victims’ families to keep them fully informed throughout the investigation.

Detective Inspector Jon Marsden of West Mercia Police said: “Maloney’s return has added a new dimension to our enquiries and we have interviewed him about his disappearance and any involvement he may have had with Lowe and Cole.”

He stressed that there was no information to suggest that either of these men present a danger to the general public, and that the police and all those involved in the investigation would continue to do everything in their power to locate the pair.

Anyone with information is urged to call West Mercia Police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
