Kingswood Meeting House in Hollywood celebrates its 300th anniversary
May 29 2008 Submitted by Rev Anthony Howe
A CAPACITY congregation gathered at Kingswood Meeting House in Hollywood, Wythall, to celebrate 300 years of continuous worship and witness in the local area - to the day that the original Trust Deed was signed.
The Trust Deed, which is still in the possession of the congregation, allowed for the building of a chapel on Dark Lane, Hollywood.
The original chapel lasted for 83 years until it was destroyed by fire during a riot. The chapel was then rebuilt on Packhorse Lane, Hollywood where it still stands today.
The service on May 18 paid tribute to the many people who have worshipped in the chapel and cared for it over these 300 years.
The congregation were treated to spectacular music including Wido's Toccata, played by organist Peter Flower on the new organ which was installed a year ago.
In addition to the enthusiastic hymn-singing, the chapel choir sang a piece for the occasion.
After the service the congregation tucked into a wonderful buffet lunch, which included a slice of the fantastic cake baked and decorated by chapel member Marina Caddick.
Many of those present purchased a commemorative medal which was designed for the occasion by local designer Mr Hamish Bowie, whose shop is at Manor Farm, Earlswood.
Minister of the chapel, the Rev Anthony Howe, said: "This was a wonderful day. We were delighted that so many people came to celebrate with us.
"Our chapel has a long and colourful history. We were one of the first places of worship in the area to be served by a woman Minister (back in 1961) and we continue to be a beacon of liberal and inclusive religion in our locality. We are famous for our warm welcome and our non-dogmatic approach to faith, and we look forward to the future."
The chapel has certainly come alive in recent years. In the last two years the congregation has more than doubled, a new organ installed, the choir re-established, a new heating system installed in the hall, new pew cushions purchased, and there are more improvements planned.
Anthony said: "Our Tercentenary Service was just the start of our celebrations. Our next event is an Open Day and Concert which will take place on Saturday 19th July from 2pm. Everyone will be welcome to that event."
