39th Birmingham Girls' Brigade celebrate its 50th anniversary

BIRTHDAY celebrations are in order as the 39th Birmingham Girls' Brigade Company celebrates its Golden Anniversary.

The Company is based at South Yardley Methodist Church on the corner of Broadyates Road and Coventry Road at the Swan island.

It was founded on 16 June 1958 and for the past 50 years has been providing fun and fellowship for girls from 5 years of age. It is a testament to the devotion of the voluntary leaders throughout the decades that the Company is still meeting after all this time.

Girls take part in various activities both work and play to enhance their skills and support their personal development. The Company recently took the girls on a weekend indoor camp as part of the celebrations. Badges are presented at the annual Awards Evening.

Girls' Brigade is a Christian organisation and the Company is an integral part of the Church family. The chaplain is the Rev Mary Shannahan.

There are currently 10 girls in the Company ranging from 5 to 15 years of age and two leaders, Sue Gaughan and Carole Kilduff. Meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 - 8pm. New members are always welcome.

Anyone who has been a member or involved in any way with the Company is invited to attend the Anniversary Service on Sunday 15 June at 11am which is to be followed by a buffet lunch.

If you would like to attend or would like information about Girls' Brigade membership, call Sue Gaughan on 0121 706 9934.
