Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at the Tesco AGM in Bickenhill

BIRMINGHAM Mail reader Dave Cornish was on hand when TV chef and presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall came to the Midlands for the Tesco annual general meeting.

Dave took this picture of the star as he called on the retail giant to improve rearing standards for poultry in the meeting at the National Motorcycle Museum in Bickenhill, Solihull.

Shareholders voted against the measure on the recommendation of the company, which rejected his claims that by selling factory-farmed chickens, it is breaching its own welfare policies.

But after the meeting Hugh said: "I think it's succeeded in putting Tesco on its mettle. I think we will see more higher welfare chickens in Tesco stores."
